The CARFAC Minimum Fee Schedule

Since 1968, CARFAC has issued its exhibition fee schedules. These schedules were developed from rates established by Jack Chambers and Tony Urquhart in 1968. They are updated yearly through negotiation and usage, and reflect increases in the cost of living. All fees are considered minimum payments for the use of the copyrights and/or the professional services of visual and media artists.

Certificate of Canadian Origin

Approved by Revenue Canada and Customs and Excise, this certificate identifies original works of art of Canadian origin, allowing them to be temporarily exported abroad without GST implications. It is valid only when signed by another CARFAC member and signed and sealed by the CARFAC National office.

Each case is unique when shipping art across international borders, depending on the country to which the work is being shipped, the duration of the voyage, the reasons for which the work is being sent, etc. In general, however, there are a few things you can do to minimize your risk of travel complications, especially at the border.
Firstly, it is recommended that you obtain a Certificate of Canadian Origin from CARFAC National, for use in the temporary export of artworks.

CARFAC members pay only $10 for the first certificate and $1 each for any additional certificates sent at the same time. Non members pay $25 for the first certificate and $5 each for any additional certificates.

Please allow two weeks to process Certificates of Canadian Origin.

Make sure handling instructions, such as "fragile", are clearly identified to reduce the risk of damage. Documenting your work through certificates, photographs, etc. as well as registering your artist material (cameras, videos, etc.) may prove to be a worthwhile practice in the event that something should go wrong.
